Black Country 1989

Overview

Martin is a deeply unhappy, emotionally dead detective in his forties whose marriage is crumbling. His wife, Natalie, struggles with alcoholism and depression. The couple both love each other, but they both find the marriage at a dead end. Kate is a young archaeologist who becomes enamored with Martin. She struggles with her rationality as she seems drawn to Martin as if pulled by a magic string. Surrounding the love triangle are a cast of characters who work with Martin to apprehend a brutal murdering racist gang, who conceal themselves behind a veil of legitimacy as a right-wing political party. The gang's leader is an evil psychopath who tries to match Martin's intelligence in a game of political chess and murder. Martin's co-workers include Lisa, a Welsh woman who finds her strength, love, and purpose when confronted by an act of violence. Trevor is a bachelor MI5 agent who helps Martin track the killers, while exorcising the ghosts of his racist father when he finds unexpected love with a woman whose parents are Indian. Andy is a muscle-bound seemingly misogynistic young policeman who must hide his sexual orientation, while discovering a hidden massacre with roots connected to Martin's genetic ancestors. Follow the characters to their stunning conclusion in this psychological romance thriller set in the British West Midlands.
