Birth of the Inland Sea: How the Colorado River Created the Salton Sea

Overview

Based on accounts by C.R. Robinson, who unintentionally caused the Colorado River to escape, and H.T. Cory, who, with the resources of the Southern Pacific Railroad, closed the breach as well as newspaper articles, professional reports, and other early Twentieth Century accounts, Birth of the Inland Sea explains how the Salton Sea came to be. With 105 early photographs and maps, plus 27 modern photographs and a map of the Sea, the book graphically sets the background for today's news that the Sea is rapidly shrinking.

Author Information

Ellen Lloyd Trover's interest in water projects started early as her parents owned and operated a heavy earthwork construction firm specializing in federal, state and municipal water systems; she grew up in the Coachella Valley 15 miles from the Salton Sea, and has returned to live on the farm where she grew up. A graduate of Vassar College (history major) and the Marshall-Wythe School of Law at The College of William & Mary, now retired from the practice of law, she continues to be active as the California State Senate Appointee to the Governing Board of the Coachella Valley Mountains Conservancy, Vice President of the Riverside County Farm Bureau, and a Director of Coachella Valley Irrigated Lands Coalition. Birth of the Inland Sea brings together her interests in history, the sea, and railroads. She has recently launched a website on lesser-known historic sites in the Southwest at www.HistoryTrove.com, and can be contacted at etrover@gmail.com.
