OverviewBipolar disorder is a mental disorder, which causes periods of abnormally elevated mood and periods of depression. The elevated mood may be classified as mania or hypomania, depending on its severity and the presence or absence of signs of psychosis. An individual is likely to make quick decisions with little regard for consequences when in manic periods. During depression, negative outlook towards life, crying and poor eye contact with others are common. There is a high risk of suicide and self-harm in people with this disorder.
