OverviewThe Esprit project, CHARM, has aimed at developing a comprehensive computer database and a set of software tools allowing the modelling of the human musculoskeletal system and the simulation of its dynamics. This book gives a synthesis on biomechanical modelling arising from the project. Biomechanical models of soft tissue involve different kinds of mathematical relationships, and their use requires basis knowledge of the theory of nonlinear mechanics as well as the incremental finite element methods. The book provides an overview of the available models, in the light of theoretical mechanics and finite element methods, for the realistic simulation of human muscles, tendons and skin. It should be useful to any research team beginning such a modelling project.
