OverviewMany university nursing departments are dominated by nursing models, which are based on discredited and out-of-date psychoanalytic theories. Mental health nurses today need up-to-date knowledge of psychological treatments, based on sound experimental evidence, and they also need to know about the biological basis for mental illnesses and understand the underlying science behind pharmacological and other physical treatments. Today's mental health nurse needs to have a knowledge of psychological, social and biological factors involved in the genesis and maintenance of mental illness, and be able to integrate knowledge from each of these areas so as to understand the nature of the illness and the person in a holistic fasion. This book provides an overview of the neurobiological basis of mental health nursing. The authors provide an account which integrates this domain with other areas. Indeed, they argue that an understadning of neurobiological factos is essential to understanding how the equilibrium of mental health is maintained and how, in turn, abnormalities in neurobiology upset the internal balance or homeostasis.
