OverviewThis publication, A Biographical Dictionary of American Civil Engineers - Volume II , supplements the first volume of this biographical dictionary with over 200 additional entries. While a civil engineer needed to be born prior to the Civil War in order to be considered for inclusion in volume I, for this second volume the basic criteria is that the engineer be born before 1900. The entire selection process is guided by the definition of a civil engineer as one who engages in the planning, design, and supervision of construction of civil works. This includes those who provide the surveys for these civil works. Those selected for inclusion were chosen based on the frequent references to them and their work in publications on engineering history. Biographical files on American civil engineers located in the Division of Engineering and Industry at the Smithsonian Institution's National Museum of American History were also consulted. Civil engineers, educators, and historians will find this volume to be as useful as the first volume. In addition, it should encourage greater interest and more scholarly investigation into the history of civil engineering.
