Biochemical and Biophysical Methods in Molecular and Cellular Biology

Overview

This book focuses on the fundamental principles and applications of several modern biochemical and biophysical techniques employed in molecular and cellular biology. It describes cutting-edge techniques for studying single molecules/biomolecules, subcellular structures, and cells. The book chapters provide an in-depth understanding of methods currently employed to visualize and probe molecular and cellular processes. The techniques discussed in this book include Mass spectrometry, Microscopy techniques, Forster resonance energy transfer (FRET), Z-scan, Fluorescence correlation and cross-correlation spectroscopy, Dynamic light scattering (DLS), X-ray crystallography, Total internal reflection fluorescence (TIRF) microscopy, Cryo-EM, NMR spectroscopy, Optical tweezers, Magnetic tweezers, Raman spectroscopy, Atomic force microscopy (AFM), Optogenetics, bioinformatics, etc. The book chapters also include the biomedical, industrial, and R&D applications of these methods. Also included are sections on data analysis and its interpretation. Overall, this book offers a comprehensive and detailed understanding of several modern techniques in molecular and cellular biology.

Author Information

Dr. Umakanta Tripathy is an Associate Professor at the Department of Physics, IIT (ISM) Dhanbad, India. Previously, he has served as a visiting scientist in the Department of Chemical Sciences, TIFR, Mumbai, India (2013-2014) and a casual employee in the Department of Physics, McGill University, Montreal, Canada (2011-2012). Apart from this, he also has postdoctoral research experiences in the Department of Physics and Chemistry, McGill University, Montreal, Canada (2008-2011) and the Department of Chemistry, University of Saskatchewan, Saskatoon, Canada (2006-2008). His research interest is in biophysics, nonlinear optics, and ultrafast laser spectroscopy, specializing in instrumentation, harmonic generation and multi-photon imaging (in-vitro, in-vivo, and ex-vivo), biomolecular interactions, and single-molecule biophysics. He has received Government of India recognition for developing a novel tool to study alpha-synuclein protein aggregation, recognition for proposing a suitable drug candidate against SARS-CoV-2, Marquis Who’s Who in the World, and awarded research fellowships in India and abroad. He has been a reviewer for several international journals. He has 23 years of experience in research & development and 14 years in teaching. He has published more than 50 research articles in peer-reviewed international journals and authored numerous book chapters. He is also a member of several scientific societies, including the Indian Photobiology Society (IPS), Indian Physics Association (IPA), Orissa Physical Society (OPS), Indian Society for Radiation and Photochemical Sciences (ISRAPS), Society for Interdisciplinary Research in Materials and Biology (SIRMB), and International Society on Optics Within Life Sciences (OWLS).
