OverviewBuilding easily outlast their inhabitants. Buildings last forever while civilizations rise and fall. Edifices remain as testaments of cultures and history, other than dwelling for humans. It also represents the advanced level of technology and human society. Building Information Modelling (BIM) in today's building industry is believed as a holistic evolution. It started with software breakthrough. After a while the practitioners realized a proper BIM implementation specification with a focus on the technology, data, process, legal, people and culture is needed to assist BIM users to achieve a standardized adoption procedure and better results. Scholars furthermore argue that it is not necessary to adopt full BIM, instead, a lean BIM concept should be considered. This book introduced a benchmark for BIM users to assess their current BIM capability, strength and weakness in project, organization and industry level. Hence, the most informed decision and strategic plan can be made. Two vital elements of this framework are: a comprehensive set of decision making criteria and a reasonable priority system - where the weightage assigned to each criteria should align with the company's objective and vision. The proposed concept can be applied regardless of project types, regions, regulations, clients' requirements etc. while specific information could definitely improve the accuracy of the framework and achieve a much higher level of BIM.This book is for high end BIM users and guide their daily BIM tasks. Those users include but are not limited to: BIM managers, regional BIM directors, BIM strategist, project managers from all parties including designer, contractor, QS, developers as well as the facility management group. This book is also suitable for BIM modelers, coordinators, designers, builders and other individuals who are engaged in a BIM based project and would like to go further. This book has demonstrated the proposed benchmark, its unique development method, application in real projects and lesson learned, take away points for reader's better understanding. He had a diploma in Civil and Structure Engineering from Singapore Polytechnic (SP). He then worked in a contractor firm: Bachy Soletanche as a modeller and design coordinator, and realized that 3D visualization and project integration will play a critical role in terms of productivity. Shortly, Building Information Modelling - BIM was raised during his further study in Cardiff University. Dr. Haijiang Li helped discover the author's passion in BIM and as a result of his successful dissertation in BIM for construction and coordination, and offered the author an opportunity in a Ph.D. position. He had been involved in quite a few BIM based UK industry projects and R&D projects during PhD period: e.g. as a BIM manager for BIM adoption on a real project with positive outcome. The author believes BIM should get rolled in a much earlier phase with a more strategic manner to enhance its effectiveness along the entire asset's lifecycle. After Ph.D., he worked for Arcadis UK with an excellent team on a core role: BIM strategy development. Whilst working as a BIM coordinator the author was also furthering his experience as a civil designer and a project management assistant. After several years of experience in design consultant, contractor and research area, he would like to find out how BIM can be promoted from the government's perspective. The Building Construction Authority (BCA) of Singapore had made a lot of effort to push BIM in Singapore's industry. In BCA, the author had been the Programme Manager and lecturer for: Specialist Diploma in BIM - a BCA recognized BIM certificate for Adult Learning; and Full Time Diploma. At the moment, the author is working on the BIM Guide for Asset Information Delivery. The author is also dedicated to charity work. He is currently working towards establishing his own charity organization. Part of the profit made from the book sale will be donated to this organization for charity purposes.
