Table of ContentsReviewsAuthor InformationRecognised as one of Australia’s finest players, Bill Lawry started his career in district cricket at Northcote Cricket Club in 1948. Just seven years later he was selected to play for Victoria – only a few months before his nineteenth birthday. In 1961, Lawry made his Australian Test debut, becoming a crucial member of the team for the next ten years and going on to captain his country for twenty-five of the sixty-seven Tests he played. Lawry’s unremitting defence on the pitch quickly established him as one of the world’s leading batsmen, his infamously long stints at the crease infuriating his opponents – and sometimes even his fans. In 1977, Lawry’s love of the game found a new medium, and Bill became one of cricket’s most well-known and loved commentators for over forty years. Up until his retirement, announced in May 2018, his catchphrases and infectious enthusiasm were an irreplaceable part of every Australian summer.
