OverviewPlease note that the content of this book primarily consists of articles available from Wikipedia or other free sources online. Big Dan Mine is an abandoned underground mine in the Cobalt Mining District of Northeastern Ontario, Canada. It is located about 1 km (0.62 mi) southwest of Net Lake and just west of the Ontario Northland Railway in east-central Strathy Township. Dating back to the early 1900s, it is one of the oldest mines in Temagami. Big Dan was the site of a disaster during its years of operation, after which it never had active mining again. A number of commodities were mined at Big Dan, such as gold, silver and arsenic. They were mined in a linear geological structure cutting the regional rocks, which is named after Big Dan Mine. Although the mine has been closed since the early 1900s, it is still an active mineral field and does at times have active mineral exploration. Big Dan Mine is named after Big Dan O'Connor, who first staked the mine site.
