(1951–2019), compiler of the present work, was a Sinologist (Ph.D. and postdoctoral thesis, University of Bonn) and an expert of religions in China, in particular Daoism and Christianity. He held the positions of Director and Editor-in-chief of the Monumenta Serica Institute, Sankt Augustin, Germany, an academic institution maintained by the Society of the Divine Word (SVD). Through the publications under his editorship from 1992 to 2012– he made a substantial and lasting contribution to the the history of Christianity in China.
