What do we really know about angels? When we picture them, our minds fill with images of beautiful, humanlike figures in white robes, with shining wings and golden halos. Yet this familiar image, lifted straight from Renaissance paintings and children's storybooks, is shaped far more by art and tradition than by the Bible itself. While our modern idea of an angel is largely inherited from Renaissance masters, who sought to depict these beings in a beautiful, friendly form, when we examine the biblical texts, apocrypha, Jewish mysticism, and the great works of Christian thinkers like Pseudo-Dionysius the Areopagite, a very different, and far richer picture emerges. As a historian and translator, Lilja Sulkakoski specializes in the intellectual and spiritual currents of the Renaissance and Early Modern period, with a particular focus on esotericism, mysticism, and Kabbalah. Her work explores the intersections of philosophy, religion, and hidden traditions.
