OverviewThe book focuses on the interface between the Biblical Creation account and Slavonic folk cosmogony, as mirrored in oral traditions, apocryphal literature and religious iconography. Exploring the encounter between Holy Scriptures and indigenous ethnopoetics, this work discusses phenomena of popular faith which exemplify correspondences between written (canonical and apocryphal) accounts of Genesis and their oral expression in vernacular languages. Examining the relationship between Holy Writ and its folklore counterparts, the book also provides previously unpublished oral texts, as well as new versions of Slavonic apocryphal writings (e.g. Second Enoch, the Contest Between Archangel Michael and Satanael, the Life of Adam and Eve, etc. attested in rare manuscripts). Most of these have never been translated into English, nor has the iconographic material been previously available.
