I learned a lot from this book and went in thinking I knew what a manipulator was. However, after reading this book I learned about dark phycology and the three different personality traits of dark psychology. The author does a great job of breaking down the signs of a manipulator, the psychology beyond their tactics, and helpful ways to detect and defend yourself against them. I honestly think this book should be a pre-req for everyone because we're all most likely going to cross paths with a manipulator at some point in time. I remember dealing with people who I thought were very manipulative, and I would have a bad gut feeling, but it was always so subtle I didn't have any proof that would justify my feelings, I just felt 'crazy'. However, the author addresses this common response and says our brains are incredibly sophisticated at detecting danger and if you feel like something's off about a person, something IS off. The author validating our instincts are right on the money made me feel relieved and I was able to learn so much about persuasion and NFL tactics as well. HIGHLY RECOMMEND THIS BOOK!! By Mendi, Amazon Customer I thoroughly enjoyed Beyond Persuasion, and for two personal reason I found it a great help with issues in my own life. Firstly, Dolton really explains the difference between manipulation and persuasion...and the only real difference is intent. That was an AHA moment for me. Persuasion is good, and so is manipulation, as long as it's done to the benefit of others (think persuading a friend to see a doctor or getting your child to eat their vegetables. They are bad if done for selfish and evil reasons, and she describes the types of people who engage it that and teaches the reader to recognize it and not fall prey. I was raised by a narcissist who fit the category well, and had no tools as a child or young women to fight it. In fact, she had to have control over everyone in her scope, and if crossed could make life very difficult. I then became someone who was unable to say no and was very easily manipulated. I love that this book not only shows us techniques to stand up to people like that, but also shows US how WE can use persuasion in a positive way. I was fascinated by her chapter on NLP and will look into that more. Anyone who needs to understand the mind of a manipulator or needs to learn to persuade others should pick this one up. By Batiki, Amazon Customer This book was fascinatingly thought-provoking! Communication goals entail informing or influencing and Dolton goes deep into the sciences of influence. She explains not only how we can better communicate and influence others, but she also discusses tell tale signs that one is being manipulated. This is a phenomenal non-fiction read!
