Overview

In Eastern Europe, more and more feature films and television series deal with historical topics. A patriotic mood is often created that is emotionally charged. Movies and TV series are used more and more in the service of history politics in Russia, Poland and the Ukraine. State and private actors take up controversial historical issues and integrate them into melodramatic scenarios. Controversial historical figures are also reinterpreted and presented as national models. History is thus integrated into a vivid and attractive spectacle. The historical film heroes go through difficult biographies, the emotional charge of which is adapted to the media consumption habits of today's viewers.

Ulrich Schmid (geb. 1965) ist seit 2007 Professor fÃ""r Kultur und Gesellschaft Russlands an der Universität St. Gallen. Von 2010 bis 2014 war er Dekan der Kulturwissenschaftlichen Abteilung. Von 2005 bis 2007 war er Professor fÃ""r Slavische Literaturwissenschaft an der Ruhr-Universität Bochum, von 2003 bis 2004 SNF-Förderungsprofessor an der Universität Bern, von 2000 bis 2003 Assistenzprofessor an der Universität Basel. 2010 war er Gastforscher an der Universität Oslo, 1995 Visiting Fellow an der Harvard University. 2004 und 1997 absolvierte er Forschungsaufenthalte in Warschau und Krakau. 1998 war er Gastdozent an der Linguistischen Universität in Kiev. 1985 bis 1991 Studium der Germanistik, Slavistik und Politischen Wissenschaften in ZÃ""rich, Heidelberg und Leningrad. Seit 1994 ist er ständiger freier Mitarbeiter im Feuilleton der Neuen ZÃ""rcher Zeitung.
