Drawing on unpublished papers and voluminous records in contemporary forestry journals, Rodgers traces Fernow's life as an organizer of the forestry movement; as a practicing forester in Slatedale, Pennsylvania; as primary architect of the U.S. Forest Service; as founding dean of the first professional forestry school in America at Cornell University; as editor of Forestry Quarterly; as dean of the faculty of forestry at the University of Toronto, the first in Canada; and as president of the Society of American Foresters and the Canadian Society of Forest Engineers.
