More than 450,000 Bengali-speaking people currently live in the US. About half are of Indian origin, and the other half are from Bangladesh. This book is a collection of 42 articles written by 25 Bengali immigrants. All are first-person narratives of memorable events in their lives in America or observations on American society and culture. These articles guide the readers through the arc of Bengali immigrants' lives in America, from the shock and awe upon arrival to the difficulties of finding housing and jobs, from understanding and adjusting to societal norms and values to confronting occasional racism and discrimination as they raised families and built careers. Some articles describe the painful soul-searching they went through before deciding to stay permanently in America, while others celebrate their achievements as immigrants. The book ends with nostalgic ruminations on the joys of calling America home while expressing deep longing for India, the country of their birth
