I just finished reading ""Being in the Shadow,"" and all I can say is WOW. I've read many books in preparation for the Great American Total Solar Eclipse, and this one is so much better than others I've read that focus on the teeniest, tiniest scientific details but largely ignore the EXPERIENCE that most people are seeking. No wonder many people decide that they will just skip eclipse day even if they're in the path of totality or near enough that traveling to it will not put an undue burden on them. HIGHLY RECOMMENDED. 5.0 out of 5 stars A must read for all Over a year ago I found Dr. Kate Russo's work on community planning and preparing for the eclipse. She wrote about how the emotional reaction can be surprising, awe inspiring. Reading Being in The Shadow has excited me even more for this coming event. The narratives were well written and the whole book flowed nicely. The stories were broken up in a way that allowed me as a reader to think about each of the different moments of preparation, decision, and response. I like the storytelling style. It is the introduction chapter that really puts this event into perspective and then narrative chapters drive this home. We can easily find many articles and books about the mechanics of eclipses and basic advice on safety, etc. with regard to viewing an eclipse. But this book really gives the flavor of the experience. Actually, those of us who give eclipse talks - all the informal and formal educators - should read it as a classic rendition of prose that hits all the notes and makes the eclipse come alive. We can only hope to share the enthusiasm and excitement found in the stories collected by this author."

Author Information

Dr. Kate Russo is an author, psychologist, and eclipse chaser; and Founder of Being in the Shadow. Kate has now seen 13 total solar eclipses from 11 countries in her 24 years of chasing, and will be an eclipse chaser for life. She has published three books on the experience of totality, leads niche eclipse tours, and is in demand in the media and as a speaker due to her passionate sharing of the awe and wonder of totality.
