Overview

Following the completion of the Fourth Supplementary Series (E IV) of the Beilstein Handbook, a general index, The Centennial Index, is being produced. It contains the names of all compounds described in the Basic Series (Hauptwerk), and in the First, Second, Third and Fourth Supplementary Series, covering -180 Years of Organic Chemistry-. Earlier rational names, constructed according to now-superceeded principles of nomenclature, have been re- placed with names created using appropriate IUPAC-sanctioned rules, as used in the Fourth Supplementary Series. The Centennial Index, containing over 1.2 million compounds, provides complete and easy access to the entire, critically evaluated, information contained in the Beilstein Handbook. The Centennial Index is an indispens- able aid for chemists engaged in research, development, and commercial and governmental regulatory work, as well as for scientists of other disciplines. The General Compound-Name Index with ten volumes appeared in 1991. The General Formula Index comprises thirteen volumes and will be completed by the end of 1992. Fur das Beilstein-Handbuch erscheint nach Abschlu des IV. Erganzungswerks ein Generalregister/Centennial Index. Es enthalt die Namen der in den Banden des Hauptwerks sowie der Erganzungswerke I, II, III und IV beschriebenen Verbindungen und umfat damit -180 Jahre Organische Chemie-. Nach veralteten Nomenklaturprinzipien gebildete Rationalnamen sind durch die im IV. Erganzungswerk gebrauchten, den IUPAC-Regeln entsprechenden Namen ersetzt worden. Mit uber 1.2 Millionen Verbindungsnamen eroffnet das Generalregister dem Benutzer einen umfassenden und bequemen Zugang zu den im Beilstein-Handbuch zusammengetragenen, kritisch gesichteten Informationen. Der Centennial Index ist so fur den in Forschung, Anwendung und Administration tatigen Chemiker sowie fur Wissenschaftler verwandter Disziplinen eine unentbehr liche Hilfe. Das General-Sachregister (Verbindungsnamen-Register) umfat 10 Teilbande und erschien 1991. Das General-Formelregister mit 13 Banden erscheint 1992.
