Behind The Scenes in Nursing: A Nurse's Reflection on the Challenges and Triumphs within the Healthcare System.

Overview

This book was written by a nurse, about nurses and the nursing profession. It follows the life of the author as she leaves her native country Guyana, to begin her nursing career in England. Trained as a Nurse, Psychiatric Nurse and Midwife, the author has worked in various nursing positions in England, the USA and Canada. After undergoing knee surgery followed by a lengthy convalescence in a rehabilitation center, she was forced to confront the ugly side of nursing, and this aroused in her a desire to pen this enlightening and relevant text. BEHIND THE SCENES IN NURSING, described as a nursing tell-all memoir, is indeed an insightful and shocking revelation of what takes place behind drawn curtains, in cubicles, on admission and assessment units, in labour and delivery rooms, in medication rooms and in staff lounges. It depicts how nurses work against all odds to ensure a safe, caring and protective environment for all patients, but it also shows a somewhat dark side of the profession. While exploring some of the issues within the healthcare system that has long plagued the nursing profession, the author proffers possible solutions by focusing on practical improvements that can be made. This book is not just for nurses but for doctors, medical students and all employed in healthcare as well as the curious public. Yvonne Sam was born in Guyana but currently resides in Montreal, Canada. She holds a Master's Degree in Education from McGill University, Bachelor of Science in Nursing from Athabasca University, New York State Nursing Licensure from Pace University and a Diploma in Adult Education from Concordia University. She also holds the title of State Registered Nurse, State Certified Midwife and State Registered Mental Nurse from England, having trained and resided there for over thirteen years. She has worked as a Head Nurse, a Nursing Examiner for the Order of Nurses of Quebec and a Secondary School Teacher with the English Montreal School Board for almost three decades. She is a regular columnist for the community newspaper Montreal Community Contact, where she writes on social, political, religious, educational, family life and current issues, with articles also published in the Montreal Gazette, Huffington Post, Toronto Star and Pride Magazine. She is the author of a published book of poetry LIFE'S MANY FACES, Poems in National Library of Poetry Anthology -- River of Dreams which won the Editor's Choice Award, and Dusting Off Dreams Volume IX published by Quill Books, Harlingen, Texas. Yvonne was the recipient of the 2014 Governor General of Canada Caring Canadian Citizen Award, a 2014 Black History Month Laureate and selected as one of the 100 Accomplished Black Canadian Women of 2024.
