Becquerel's Plate Volume One

Overview

Taking up where Perturbations left off, this next volume in Judith Lauter's autobiographical series joins the story in August 1971, five years after she and her husband Ken married in Tucson and then left their beloved West to get advanced degrees. Ken wanted a PhD in English literature, Judy planned to study linguistics - but she was also on the threshold of a major change in her intellectual life. Judy's early education, primarily in the humanities, revolved around literature, especially the reading and writing of poetry. She had always also loved science - but there was little encouragement in 1950s America (including from family and friends) for a young woman to consider science as a career. Yet the fortress of her old educational focus was showing cracks. Over the first few years of her life with Ken, she experienced the freedom from old constraints, and the excitement of an intellectually stimulating marriage. Her fascination with science re-asserted itself, and she made new plans - centered on Washington University in St. Louis. There, her dreams were realized - and her longstanding interests in human behavior, languages, and the biology behind behavior came together. Over the course of a decade, she became a behavioral neuroscientist. This book is the first in the five-volume story of her life as a scientist, under the overall title of Becquerel's Plate. This one and the next recount how her work at Washington University resulted in a radical transformation, enabling the 'gestation' of an unexpected, completely new, and challenging life path.
