Becoming Wholehearted: A Path to Who You Were Created to Be Through Connection with God, Yourself, and Others

Overview

The life you long for begins with the answer to one key question. As human beings, we long for lives of purpose and significance, and for relationships where we feel seen, known, valued, and respected. So we read books and search Scripture trying to understand our place in the world through answers to deep questions-Who am I? Why am I here? But beneath those questions is an even deeper one: Am I loved? We may know the biblical truth about God's love, but when fear rises, we often react in ways that don't reflect what we believe. This creates distance in our relationships with God and others. The problem is that rational understanding alone cannot reach the places in our hearts where fear lives. To be set free, we must come to experientially know God's love in the deepest parts of our hearts. As God's love becomes our lived reality, we increasingly experience peace and freedom-the freedom to live from our true identity, to relate with authenticity and courage, and to step into our God-given purpose. Becoming Wholehearted offers a way into that kind of life through a journey of reconnection to God, yourself, and others. Through personal narrative, spiritual insight, and practical guidance, Anisa Sumlar and Larry Bolden illuminate a way of living that moves you from knowing about God's love to experiencing it as the transforming center of your story.

Reviews

Becoming wholehearted transformed everything in my life. I moved from being a task-focused leader to a people-focused one, from hiding behind competence to living vulnerably. My wife and I now connect more deeply, fighting for each other instead of with each other. In Nigeria, I have watched missionaries and national leaders slow down and engage one another's hearts, including areas of profound pain they had long normalized. As mission leaders, we have seen that when people stop hiding and live from their whole hearts, God's transforming love meets their deepest longings to be seen, known, and loved, changing the way they live, relate, and disciple people. -Chris Guzzardo, Mission Base Leader, Nigeria For more than twenty years, my ministry and congregation have been reshaped by God's call to wholehearted living. I have watched weary hearts awaken, leaders emerge, and marriages heal as we embraced the biblical truth and grace of becoming wholehearted. Many believers exhaust themselves searching for a grand purpose in the larger story, but Larry and Anisa remind us that our deepest calling is to cooperate with the Triune God as he forms us into who He created, redeemed, and is restoring us to be. This book is a life-giving invitation to that journey. -Bob Flayhart, D.Min, Founding Pastor, Oak Mountain Presbyterian Church (PCA) Becoming Wholehearted isn't just a book; it's an encounter. As I turned each page, it felt like sitting with trusted friends who reminded me that God still meets us in the middle of our lives. Larry and Anisa write with such honesty and warmth that truth feels personal again. Their words and stories stirred something deep in me, a longing to live with an open heart as a woman, wife, mother, friend, and pastor. This book doesn't just inspire; it heals, restores, and awakens hope you may have thought was lost. -Bobbi Lassiter, Discipleship Pastor, Covenant Methodist Church (GMC) Becoming Wholehearted is both clinically sound and spiritually wise-a rare integration of psychological, spiritual, and relational insight! Larry and Anisa illuminate the movements of the heart with clarity, depth, and genuine hope. This book revealed places in my own soul where I had muted my longings and braced against disappointment, stirring a fresh awakening to wholehearted engagement with God, myself, and others. This book will serve individuals, couples, and ministry leaders seeking meaningful connection and a path toward wholeness. -Dan Sartor, Ph.D., M.B.A., Psychologist and Organizational Consultant, The Wings Center
