Overview

This is about the formative years of Robert Goren. It consists of two publications put together. The first, a small booklet titled ""On 31st Street: Stories of Growing Up,"" recalls his boyhood in Detroit during the 1930s and early 1940s, evoking a neighborhood and a time that have passed from living memory. The second, ""France and the Army: A Memoir,"" turns to the late 1950s, when he received his draft notice and was sent to France to serve in the Army. Together they reveal not only what he lived through and how those experiences shaped him, but also something of the world that formed him-a world a century removed from our own, yet still part of our family's story.
