She was a Principal Dancer with The Washington Ballet, of which she was a founding member. As a Principal Dancer, Ms. Sturm originated many lead roles and performed principal roles in the company's repertoire. She also appeared as a soloist dancer with her late husband, Robert, in Jerome Hines's opera, ""I Am the Way"", at the Bolshoi Theatre in Moscow.Ms. Sturm's experience in the world of ballet as a dancer, teacher, and working with children for the majority of her adult life, as well as working for several years in a preschool, is what inspired her writing of children's books. Her writing ranges from her children's books to non-fiction books that bring hope and encouragement to adults as well as children.
