Overview

In Because Of My Horse, Catherine Huddleston shares the story of her life so far, told through her relationships with her beloved horses. Experiencing sexual trauma from a young age, Cathy discovers how to heal herself-and others-through the power and grace of the horses in her life. Now a horse trainer, educator, and mental health advocate, Cathy speaks candidly about her experiences as a Midwestern tomboy tearaway, a courageous cowgirl, a queer woman in a man's world, and as a survivor and thriver. Because Of My Horse is a story of resilience and determination, suffused with truth, compassion, and raw emotion. Over four turbulent decades, ride with Cathy and discover how owning your own recovery and following your heart can take you to places you never thought possible.

Reviews

""As a trauma psychologist, I can honestly say that Because of My Horse reveals profound insights about trauma, healing, and the deep bonds between humans and animals. This is a pioneering and thoroughly engaging exploration of how the relationships between horses and humans can guide us back to our own innate wisdom and capacity for healing. A must read for anyone looking to better understand the road to resilience and connection."" - Rebecca Bailey, PhD, Polyvagal Equine Institute ""Cathy Huddleston has created a heart-wrenching, heartwarming memoir to connect all the frayed pieces of your soul. I didn't want the book to end because of her wonderful storytelling."" -Stacey Simmons, PhD, author of The Queen's Path ""You will laugh, you will cry, you will be emboldened with anger and will find your voice through this coming-of-age memoir. You will also develop a deeper understanding of the nature and impacts of trauma."" - Melanie Dallas, LPC, equine facilitated therapist practitioner ""Cathy Huddleston is a teacher profoundly in tune with her students, a passionate friend of both humans and horses, and woman who walks a spiritual path. She shares her tender and intimate life stories of challenges, traumas, and realities. Cathy offers insight gained from an unconditional love realized by being innocently open-hearted and devoted to her horses."" - Karen Head, M.Ed, facilitator and founder of Equinection LLC ""While all of our journeys are unique, this author's unflinching retelling of hers has the power to help lead so many of us in the direction of healing. And that, through the most gifted healers among us - horses."" - David Sonatore, LCSW, author and co-founder of The Equus Effect ""This book is a really in-depth and hard look into the soul of someone I admire greatly. Cathy holds nothing back of herself, laying it all out there for everyone to see. I laughed, cried, and felt hope along with her as she went through a journey that many could not have completed. Cathy has been a teacher, an inspiration, and a friend to me. I truly would not be the man I am today without her."" - Brad Altherr, veteran
