More than two centuries ago, Edmund Rice looked out a window in Waterford and saw people in dire poverty. He looked into his own heart, trusted in the Spirit for guidance and strength and was moved to compassion and to action as he answered God's call to serve the excluded and marginalised. Thus, the foundations of what has become the Edmund Rice Network throughout the world today were laid. Throughout the past 2,000 years, many Christians have responded to the gospel call to hear the cry of the poor and to respond through seeing, judging and acting - just as Edmund Rice did. AUTHORS: Aidan Donaldson is a former lecturer in the Department of Scholastic Philosophy at Queen's University Belfast and at St Malachy's Junior Seminary. He currently works as educational consultant to the Catholic Schools Support Service for the Diocese of Down and Connor and is a noted author who has published numerous books and articles on a wide range of subjects including philosophy, education and theology. Denis Gleeson is a Christian Brother and former school principal, whose interests include school ethos, religious education, pastoral care, psychology, iconography and adult spirituality. He helped establish the Westcourt Centre in Belfast and the Edmund Rice School Trusts in the Republic of Ireland and Northern Ireland. An author, spiritual director and retreat facilitator, he is a committed member of Contemplative Outreach.
