He lives on BC's Sunshine Coast with his wife Rosemary. Born in Toronto, Rosemary Bates spent much of her life working as a print journalist in Winnipeg and Toronto. She later became a producer at the CBC of current affairs and arts programs, including The Arts Report and The Arts Tonight.
