Beauty and The Dark: A Cancer Memoir of Traveling, Grieving, Loving, and Living

Overview

It's not always about the waterfalls and beaches, sometimes it is just about the people we meet on our travels that show you more beauty than any landscape can. I have a desire to make something beautiful come from a sometimes very ugly and dark reality. Living, for Angela, was not just about her struggles and challenges, but learning to live despite them. She recognized and believed that we all had struggles, and she believed that each person's challenges were equal to hers. Angela did not believe that cancer gave her struggles greater weight than any others. I want to remind people that terminal doesn't always look terminal and that you never know what's beneath the surface. Throughout the seven years Angela was in treatment, she/we always balanced treatment options with symptoms, level of disability, and quality of life. It is a narrow beam to walk without a right or wrong answer. It is about balance, but this scale has more than two sides.

Author Information

Carol Hordis, a retired nurse practitioner, is Angela's mother. Viewing her daughter's journey through this personal lens, she completes Angela's story and shares her own experiences of first being the mother of an adult child with metastatic breast cancer and then continuing on after Angela's death, grieving. Angela specifically requested that Carol create and publish this book, which has helped her move toward peace and healing. After growing up in New England, Angela Amoroso studied literature and journalism with a minor in history at the University of Southern Queensland, Australia. Embracing her love of travel, she kept a journal on and off throughout her life, eventually creating a blog called ""Beauty and The Dark"" after her diagnosis with breast cancer at age 34. Angela wrote honestly about her experience, sharing the joys, the struggles, the dark times, and how she found a way to live life to the fullest-highlighting the difference between just being alive and truly living. Angela continued to write until cancer interfered with her ability to do so, and her message still resonates with a wide audience today.
