In his younger years he participated in the Dutch Youth Championships, the Open Dutch Championships and he played a number of years in a team in the Dutch national league. In those years he wrote theoretical articles for the New in Chess magazine and its predecessor Schaakbulletin. After a long stay outside the Netherlands, Jan has picked up chess again.
