Author Information

Beatriz Fernández Fernández is a full professor in the Department of Linguistics and Basque Studies at the University of the Basque Country (UPV/EHU). She received her PhD in 1997 from the same institution and is a corresponding member of the Euskaltzaindia, the official authority on the usages, vocabulary, and grammar of the Basque language. Her research has centered around morphosyntactic variation in Basque, and she has published a variety of articles in international journals such as Natural Language and Linguistic Theory, Syntax, Linguistic Typology and Folia Linguistica among others. She has also published books on the topic as well as edited compilation volumes for Oxford University Press, John Benjamins, and Brill, among other publishers. The present volume is the English translation of her first book on science intended for the general public. She has one child and currently lives in the Basque Country on the Bay of Biscay. Eider Etxebarria Zuluaga graduated from the University of Deusto with a bachelor's degree in Modern Languages. She completed her master's degree in Hispanic Linguistics at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. Currently, she is finishing her doctoral dissertation in Language Acquisition at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign and was awarded the prestigious National Science Foundation Doctoral Dissertation Research Improvement Grant in 2020. She has taught linguistics, Spanish, and Basque at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. This translation and adaptation project is part of her mission to disseminate Basque language and culture with the aim that English-speakers can inquire more into and come to appreciate our cultural treasure and linguistic heritage.
