Overview

Basics Design 02: Layout (2nd edition) provides a guide to the effective arrangement of text and image elements within a design scheme, enabling students to learn how to create powerful forms of visual communication in both print and electronic media. This title addresses both practical and aesthetic considerations, including the arrangement of graphic elements within a design scheme and what happens when the grid is abandoned. Reviews

Thanks to AVA for producing great resources for design educators. I've been very, very pleased with the materials again! Bennett Holzworth, Concordia University, USA The complete basic design series will be a good addition as both primary and ref books for coursework. Gail Bayeta, Austin Community College, USA Another wonderful text on a very important topic. Very thorough and full of good recommendations and rules to apply. Stanly Community College, USA This book is a great primer for students - or anyone wanting to focus on basics principles of design. Dynamic Graphics (on the first edition) The book Basic Design 02: Layout, is easy to understand and lots of photos and illustrations to explain the text. Great resource. Each chapter is flawlessly comprehensive and the pictures, diagrams and photographs make this book a must for any designer who is looking to fully understand the essential skills required for making a good layout. As the Basic Design 01: Format, it is a very good book to use as supporting material for my classes. Celine Duijndam, Teacher, Hogeschool Rotterdam, Netherlands I have found no better text for teaching graphic design than the Basics Design series-they're the books I've been waiting my entire teaching career for. Chapter-based learning packaged in easily digestible sizes for one term with excellent, current examples of the theory presented in practice. Darren Stebeleski, Martha Street Studio, Canada I liked the way the book cleverly uses itself to demonstrate its content. The use of mixed papers is a particularly useful aspect when teaching. Overall, the book is contemporary and attractive in its layout and price ... Its content is particularly relevant ... as a teaching tool for staff, and as a reference book for students throughout all four years of the Fashion Marketing programme. Nick Sellars, Northumbria University, UK A really great text with wonderful images and clear explanations. Alyssa Lang, Cal Poly Pomona, USA The book is very easy to read and it has an attractive layout, which is inviting as a page-turner. The chapters explore the basics of layout in an engaging manner. Andrea Vom Ende Thoma, The Art Institute of Atlanta, USA An absolutely brilliant book and an absolute must have for anyone learning layout in graphic design or otherwise. It gives a excellent insight into the basic forms of layout from the simple symmetrical grid and its application to the application of more complex grids such as module based grids ... I'm impressed by the range of topics that are covered in Layout and the book overall lays a really strong ground structure for students to build upon or for people to remind themselves of. Overall I'm very impressed and happy to recommend it to all the students I teach and colleges I work with. It's a must have for all graphic students at a really good price. Matthew Mould, University of Derby, UK
