Overview

This new stand alone volume chronicles the history of Barton and its vehicles from the operator's origins through to its demise and acquisition by Trent. The name of Barton was synonymous with bus operation in the East Midlands. The company, which was one of the largest independent operators in the British Isles (and, unlike other major independents, was not subsumed ultimately into either the NBC or one of the PTEs), dominated stage carriage services in Nottinghamshire until its demise in the early 1990s. The company's origins date back to 1900, when the founder, T. H. Barton, operated his first bus in Mablethorpe, although the first regular service was not established until 1908 and, from these origins, a significant network of routes developed. The company's predominantly red buses were an eclectic mix of new and second-hand vehicles, many of which had been significantly modified in the company's own workshops. The company had a strong reputation for experimentation; notable examples being the so-called Barton Gliders of the late 1920s and early 1930s, which started life as Italian cars built by Lancia before being converted into six-wheel buses. Barton was also the first bus operators to run an oil (ie diesel) bus; again, this was originally of Italian manufacture before being rebuilt with a Gardner engine. This descriptive new book includes informative text allied to 150 fascinating mono and colour illustrations. An excellent addition to any transport enthusiasts collection
