Overview

The author, Thomas E. Dawson, is back again with his second book about boating safely. In his first book, Safe Boating in Southwest Florida: Cape Coral Edition: Your Guide to the Many Channels on Our Waterways, Dawson wrote about what boaters can expect to find on the waterways in and around Lee County, Florida. This volume contains some of the articles Dawson wrote for the local Lee County newspapers to promote boating safely. Lee County, on the Gulf Coast of Florida, attracts retirees, vacationers and seasonal residents, due to the weather and the access to the Gulf of Mexico. Boaters of all types can enjoy hundreds of miles of waterway without ever venturing out into the Gulf of Mexico. Due to the many visitors and the number of boaters who have never taken a basic boating education course, Lee County also sees too many boating accidents each year. The pieces included in this volume are presented to help all boaters be reminded of things they may have forgotten or overlooked. For some readers, these pieces may present new ideas or tips from which they can benefit. For all readers, it is hoped that these short essays will inspire them to dig a little deeper and learn a little more. Perhaps they will encourage the reader to take a basic boating class-such as America's Boating Course or one of the other boating courses offered by America's Boating Club or the United States Coast Guard Auxiliary-so that they can begin their journey to becoming a Prudent Mariner.
