Reviews

Martin's perceptive delineation of the essential characteristics of the Baroque results in a convincing conceptual scheme for an understanding of the style. Vivid characterizations of the masterpieces add to Martin's generalization. In addition to the more than 200 conveniently arranged and well-annotated illustrations, the volume contains an appendix of translated documents. There does not, I believe, exist a better introduction to the Baroque. -- Library Journal Sensitive and reliable. His illustrations are well chosen and he has clearly looked with a fresh and inquiring mind at the works of art themselves. -- Ellis Waterhouse, The Burlington Magazine This has no rival as a nonchronological introduction to one of the great periods of European art. -- Choice
