Barnaby Rudge is set in the so-called Gordon Riots, anti-Catholic riots in England in 1780.Barnaby Rudge was the fifth of Dickens' novels to be published. It was originally planned to appear first, but publisher changes led to many delays, and it first appeared in serial form in the aforementioned weekly, the Clock, from February to November 1841. It was the first attempt on the part of of its author of practicing the historical novel; he only published another such novel: A Tale of Two Cities, also set in times of revolution.It is one of his least appreciated novels and has rarely been adapted for film or television.
