OverviewThis lifesong, titled Balance, is the third in a series of six. It's quite short (less than 18 minutes), acappella, SATB, and guaranteed to be easy and fun to sing. What is a lifesong ? A lifesong is a four-movement choral work (with or without instruments) in which a rational argument about any life issue is battled-out musically. There's only one rule: every lifesong must use the following four titles for its four movements: 1. CREDO Latin for I believe, the Credo movement sings about a general pre-existing belief about any life issue. 2. ONE HAND The names for movements 2 and 3 come from the familiar expression: on the one hand [this] - but on the other hand [that]. This movement introduces something specific about the life issue and examines it. 3. OTHER HAND This movement examines a different aspect of the life issue - a contrasting way of looking at it. If the previous movement was sweet, this one will probably be sour. If the previous was about abundance, this one will probably be about scarcity. 4. GO AND DO Now that the two hands have tossed the arguments back and forth, some sort of synthesis or new resolution will have to be made. Maybe there will be growth with a new way of being, a new way of living in the world, a new Credo. Or maybe not. With its Credo beginning and its Go and Do (Ite Missa Est) ending, the lifesong may be seen as a secular cousin to the choral Mass.
