Overview

Dr Gordon, a prominent artist, died mysteriously in the Cairngorms in 1958. Also, mysteriously, from being a SOE operator in France, 1940-45 his considerable fortune seems to have emerged. Why did Trustees send orphaned daughter Hideolin to France? Why did family solicitor, Alex unexpectedly moves to Spain? His son, a junior London Barrister, had just finished a case which upset many, so took leave to handle his father s work. He faces a complex muddle, defining, managing and guarding the Gordon s surprisingly large estate, until Hide comes of age. Mysteries need resolution concerning land rights, death, and how fortunes evolved in cash and artwork and their legitimacy. Much needs to be understood, quickly, to safeguard Gordon s legacy, as some act in a manner consistent with intent to obtain advantage from largely unclassified assets. Scattered clues, some perceived as such by Hugh s eccentric father, he hid, not expecting to have need to be absent from his responsibilities. Hugh in Ballater and Hide in Bordeaux, a thousand miles apart, separately find clues before meeting in Ballater to gain some control over these matters. This is the middle part of a trilogy; other books take the characters between 1940-58 and post 1958.
