Overview

"Baguazhang, more commonly known as Bagua, is a Chinese martial art distinguished by its dynamic footwork and circular motions. Tae Chi Chuan and Xingyi Quan are two other internal martial arts that comprise this classification. Baguazhang is frequently rendered as ""Eight Trigram Palm,"" an allusion to the style's eight distinct palm techniques, which originate from the Taoist cosmological concept of Bagua, or the Eight Trigrams. Dong Haichuan, during the latter part of the 19th century, synthesized a multitude of martial arts techniques, including those found in the Book of Changes, traditional Chinese martial arts, and Taoist circuit walking. This culminated in the development of Baguazhang. Circular pacing is a characteristic that distinguishes Baguazhang training. In addition to functioning as a form of meditation, continuous circular patterns executed by practitioners aid in the development of mobility, flexibility, and fluidity. Baguazhang places significant emphasis on dexterous footing, swift swings in trajectory, and the implementation of circumnavigating circular maneuvers as a means to evade direct opposition. In Baguazhang, numerous strikes, joint locks, throws, and takedowns are executed, frequently in the form of circular footwork. In addition to open hand strikes and palm strikes, the art occasionally employs implements such as straight swords, staffs, and deer horn blades. Similar to other internal martial arts, Baguazhang prioritizes the use of visualization techniques, meditation, and breathing exercises to cultivate internal energy (qi or chi). It is believed that this internal energy improves the health, strength, and ability to execute techniques efficiently of the practitioner. In addition to its efficacy in combat, Baguazhang has garnered attention for its health advantages and its emphasis on the integration of the physical, mental, and spiritual realms. Martial artists worldwide currently engage in this art form for the purposes of self-defense, physical well-being, and spiritual growth."
