Bad Day Sunshine is a book for any kid who's ever had a bad day at school - which is just about every kid - and shows how easy it can be to help make them better. In this sweet and inspiring story, four kindergarten-age children use simple acts of kindness to help each other overcome bad days at school. The story takes place at school and shines a positive light on each of the main characters as they recognize fellow classmates having a bad day and quietly step in to help. The book offers children, and especially those with social anxiety, a set of positive examples to help them navigate similarly difficult situations they may be facing at school. It also provides teachers with a great discussion starter that encourages students to share their feelings about how to make days at school friendlier and more inclusive.

Author Information

Daniel Branley is a first-time author, longtime husband and dad to three adult boys.After retiring from his day job in 2024, he wrote Bad Day Sunshine as a tribute to his late mother and the sweet way that she interacted with children - even the sometimes-naughty ones like him - showing them, firsthand, how easy it can be to brighten someone's day.Daniel is a lifelong Seattleite who, despite his rainy surroundings, writes about sunshine and how it can be harnessed by children to make the world a warmer and kinder place. Annely So is an illustrator and writer who is also an outdoor educator and kindergarten teacher. Her young students are often inspirations or co-conspirators in her stories. Annely lives on Vancouver Island where she is often outside on an adventure.
