Bad Country

Overview

""Remember what I said, Laura. Stay away from that awful place. It's just not safe."" People and place. A deep and timeless connection Since European settlement, disturbing things have happened in the small town of Wallaby Rock. When the bodies of teenage football stars Benny and Jordy Thompson are discovered at the bottom of the local gorge, everyone is shocked. Everyone except 18-year-old Laura Murray. Laura has the gift of second sight. It's a gift she's never wanted and struggles to accept. Laura is drawn to the gorge, ignoring the warnings of her best friend Joanna and her family to stay away. As Laura's dreams grow darker, more disappearances and deaths occur, and Wallaby Rock is front-page news for all the wrong reasons. Bad Country explores the concept of psychogeography. There has always been a strong connection between people and place. But how deeply does our geographical environment shape our emotions and behaviours? Is it possible that evil deeds not only affect victims and their families for generations but can mark the landscape?

Author Information

Kim Ulrick lives on the beautiful far south coast of NSW and after a long hiatus has reconnected with her passion for storytelling. Bad Country is Kim's debut novel. Influenced by too many Scooby Doo cartoons and The Famous Five plotlines, at the age of nine, Kim wrote her first story, The Spooky Castle. Kim's love of writing led her to complete a Bachelor of Arts in Communication, majoring in Journalism, and she started as a junior writer and researcher with The Australian Financial Review in the Canberra Press Gallery. Kim spent 30 years in the Australian Public Service working with national criminal intelligence, law enforcement agencies and departments delivering national communication strategies and policy initiatives for the Australian public. During her career, Kim engaged with Indigenous communities across northern Australia from Cairns to the Torres Strait, Darwin, the Tiwi Islands and Broome. Kim loves crafting authentic, Australian stories and her writing is inspired by her life experiences. When she's not writing Kim can be found playing golf, enjoying good wine and walking on the beach with her family and her beloved Kelpie. Kim's obsession with golf and wine is featured in her blog Reds, Whites and Greens and you can access her blog, short stories and other content at https: //kimulrickwriter.com
