OverviewBacterial wilt caused by Ralstonia solanacearum is one of the most important diseases of solanaceous vegetables (tomatoes, eggplants, chillies, peppers and potatoes). The disease is soil-borne in nature and leads to widespread damage and significant loss. Research on understanding the nature of the pathogen means of mitigation are not available in one place. In this title information scattered in various literature is collected and systematically compiled by crop. The importance of solanaceous vegetables and their nutritive value, pathogen and bacterial wilt is discussed in the first chapter. The symptomatology of diseases, including photographs, their etiology, distribution of race biovars and their diagnosis, morphological, biochemical physiological characteristics of pathogen, pathogenecity, serodiagnosis, molecular diagnosis and protocol for detection of R. solancearumin soil and plant is discussed in the second chapter. The maintenance and preservation of culture is covered in the third chapter. Genomics and the mechanism of pathogenesis is discussed in the fourth chapter. Research work on losses and epidemiology is collected in the fifth chapter. In the sixth chapter the management of diseases is discussed. Conclusion and future research makes up the final chapter. This collection will be useful for anyone involved in research, teaching and extension, for post-graduate and Ph.D students, researchers, extension workers and farmers. It will help increase knowledge of bacterial wilt of solanaceous crops and their scientific management to reduce crop losses.
