Lance Brewer's Back Story Alaska: Reflections on the Wild Beauty and Characters of the Alaskan Bush is an engaging adventure story that comes with beautiful pictures and heart tugging poems ... Sometimes funny, sometimes poignant, Lance Brewer shares his Alaskan interaction not only with its awe inspiring landscape, but also with its adventurous people and its varied animals ... And as we go through the pages and gasp at man's encounters with nature, we cannot help but reflect on our own personal struggles with hope, survival, love and life itself. - Maria Beltran for Reader's Favorite ***** Lance Brewer admits that his sense of urgency to live life to the fullest may be a character flaw, but he clearly has no regrets. His decision to carve out as much as time as possible to fish, fly, and view wildlife in Alaska is fueled by his passion and love for this unique landscape. A lawyer by trade, the author takes every chance he gets to visit Alaska and eventually establishes Camp Brewer as a base for his experiences. In a wonderful scene near the end of the book, he questions himself in the style of a lawyer questioning a witness about the reasons he came to Alaska. This reflective Q&A tool offers deep self-examination and profound answers about making life decisions out of love and not fear. As Brewer narrates his Alaskan memories, a cast of characters emerges as companions full of wisdom, humor, questions, and discoveries. His recollections of people and places are moving tributes to a shared journey in a wild land, and his descriptions of the terrain and the wildlife are detailed and awe-inspiring. The photographs that accompany the text are beautiful images full of vivid colors, animals in action, and wondrous scenery. Brewer's conversational prose is accompanied by delightful poems that echo the themes of each reflective chapter and Alaskan anecdote. The author's tone is that of a favorite friend regaling everyone at the dinner table with adventurous tales of Alaska with its wayward bears and moose, the bounty of salmon, and all-weather vistas. This is a man who has found a place in the world that feeds his soul and allows him to live the kind of life in nature that he values. He hears the tick-tock of life going by too fast and refuses to put off the adventures he wants to have today. RECOMMENDED by the US Review ***** Back Story Alaska is a collection of exhilarating and humorous first hand-account of one man's passion for introducing travelers to the beautiful and largely unspoiled wilderness of the 49th state. Filled with memorable encounters and integrated poetry from seasoned outdoorsman Lance Brewer and brilliant color photos from the renowned photographer, Bob Dreeszen. - Chanticleer Reviews Rating: 5/5 Stars ***** .. .In today's world, places like Alaska are the last few truly remote places left away from the grip of human technology and civilization. I enjoyed reading about Lance's adventures in the wild and more about the history of Alaska, and his dry, humorous writing style makes this book entertaining ... the book was a fun, engaging, and entertaining read. - Gisela Dixon for Reader's Favorite

Author Information

"Lance Brewer was born and raised in Southern California. Lance played college baseball at UCLA and University of Utah. He was admitted to practice law in California in 1986. Thereafter, Lance became a pilot, gaining ratings as an Airline Transport, Multi-Engine, Seaplane and Helicopter pilot, which served him well in his exploration of Alaska. In 1994 and 2005, Lance was the chief campaign strategist for Marilyn Brewer for Assembly and Congress, respectively. In 2005, Brewer was appointed to serve on the Board of Directors of Advanced Photonix (API), a publicly traded company. Bob Dreeszen, or ""Ugashik Bob"", joined the Navy in June of 1961. Author Lance Brewer describes Ugashik Bob thusly: ""There is only one attribute about Ugashik Bob that exceeds his tenacity and toughness, his intelligence."" After being tested extensively by the Navy, he was among a select few to serve as an Aviation Electricians Mate. After leaving the Navy, Ugashik Bob began his career with IBM, in Rochester, Minnesota, as a Senior Large Systems Engineer. In February of 1983, Bob was transferred to Anchorage. In September of 1985, Bob went on a fishing trip to Southwest Alaska, to the Ugashik Narrows. It was love at first bite. Ugashik Bob absolutely had to find a plot of land upon which to build he and his wife, Carol, a home. In May of 1986, Ugashik Bob and Carol started building their home just below the lower Ugashik Lake, in Ugashik, Alaska, where the majority of the photographs in the Back Story Alaska were taken."
