Overview

This compilation presents over 400 aircraft advertisements from A.V. Roe & Co Ltd (Avro), dating from 1931 until the Avro name was dropped and output fully absorbed into the Hawker Siddeley Group in 1963. (A special supplement includes Avro Canada aircraft and engine ads from 1950-1959, featuring notable entries for the ill-fated Avro Arrow.) Covering 30 years of Avro's prolific production, this volume showcases the company's extensive and stylish advertisements. It features all Avro production aircraft from the Avian to the 748, as well as interesting ads for the Delta research aircraft, which evolved into the Avro 698 and eventually the mighty Vulcan. Fans of the Shackleton will appreciate the many detailed ads for this enduring workhorse. The Lancaster, Anson, York, Lincoln, and Ashton are well represented, while ads for the Manchester and the Tudor series of airliners provide additional interest. Avro's had a reputation for producing fine military training aircraft such as the Tutor, but despite a determined advertising campaign the pioneering turboprop-powered Athena did not enter quantity production partly due to the Air Ministry mandated switch to Merlin power. This book is part of a series that chronologically records the published ads of various aviation companies, focusing on A.V. Roe & Co Ltd (Avro) in this case. It does not attempt to provide a company history or a narrative description of the ads. To keep production costs low, the adverts are reproduced in grayscale. Each advert occupies a full page and is annotated with the original publication date and record number (AdRef) from the Aviation Ancestry master database. These advertisements tell the story of an innovative and pioneering aircraft manufacturer during times of significant technological and industry changes. This volume is a valuable addition to any aircraft historian's bookshelf and will not disappoint.
