OverviewAutotransfusion or autologous blood transfusion is an alternative to homologous transfusion. This work describes the various techniques for economising in the use of blood in surgery, including intentional normovolemic hemodilution which alters the blood's rheological properties. Programmed deferred autotransfusion as well as peroperative saving and recirculation of blood may be self sufficient and also avoids the risk of transmission of viral diseases such hepatitis and HIV infection as well as satisfying the wishes of religious sects such as Jehovah's Witnesses.
