Overview

Authority is a tremendous thing in the universe; nothing overshadows it. God's throne is established on His authority, and His authority represents God Himself. God alone is the authority in all things; all the authorities of the earth are instituted by Him. It is, therefore, important for those of us who desire to serve God to know His authority. God's authority is absolute; hence, we must give Him absolute submission (our heart's attitude) and absolute obedience (our outward actions). But to His delegated authorities we cannot render absolute submission, only relative obedience. For their authorities are circumscribed by the measure of Christ within them. Only when they themselves submit to God's authority are they able to represent God. Hence, there is much we need to learn about how to represent Him.

Watchman Nee (1903-1972) was a Chinese church leader and teacher who converted to Christianity at the age of seventeen and began writing that same year. Throughout his more than thirty years of ministry, he was a unique gift of the Lord for the Chinese church of his time. In 1952, he was imprisoned for his faith by the Chinese government and remained imprisoned until his death.
