Paramahansa Yogananda (1893 - 1952) nació bajo el nombre de Mukunda Lal Ghosh en Gorakhpur, India. A los diecisiete años conoció a su maestro espiritual, Swami Sri Yukteswar. Estudió en el Scottish Church College y después Filosofía y Letras en la Universidad de Calcuta. En 1914, tomó los votos de monje en la orden monástica de los swamis y pasó a llamarse Swami Paramahansa Yogananda. En 1917, fundó en Ranchi una escuela para varones en la que enseñaba métodos educativos modernos, técnicas de yoga e ideales religiosos. Se mantuvo junto a su gurú, Sri Yukteswar, hasta 1920, cuando recibió el Divino mandato de Babaji para viajar a Occidente y difundir el Kriyā yoga alrededor del mundo. Se estableció en California y fundó la Self-Realization Fellowship. Paramahansa Yogananda (1893-1952) was born as Mukunda Lal Ghosh in Gorakhpur, India. At the age of seventeen, he met his spiritual teacher, Swami Sri Yukteswar. He studied at Scottish Church College and later pursued Philosophy and Literature at the University of Calcutta. In 1914, he took monastic vows in the Swami monastic order and adopted the name Swami Paramahansa Yogananda. In 1917, he founded a boys' school in Ranchi, where he taught modern educational methods, yoga techniques, and religious ideals. He remained with his guru, Sri Yukteswar, until 1920, when he received the Divine mandate from Babaji to travel to the West and spread Kriyā yoga worldwide. He settled in California and founded the Self-Realization Fellowship.
