Overview

As seen on Global TV Vancouver & Montreal, CTV Calgary & Edmonton, Citytv Breakfast Television Vancouver & Calgary, CHCH All News & CTS Always Good News Burlington and more. Simone is wonderful ...a must see! Connie smith, CTS Autism: Hot Pink and Zebra-Striped The last decade has been a pivotal one in the treatment of autism. Although we have always known about rare cases of children with autism recovering spontaneously , recent advances have assisted more and more children to function in normal or near normal ways. The ingredients needed to facilitate these good outcomes are just now being identified. Genevieve was fortunate to be born into a family of supportive, gifted, energetic people who were quick to indentify her differences, resourceful in finding ways to truly understand her, and relentless in creating opportunities for her to learn and grow. Her mother Simone, in particular, has an uncanny ability to see life though Genevieve's eyes, to anticipate problems and successes, and to translate the world for Genevieve and, as in Autism: Hot Pink and Zebra-Striped, translate Genevieve to the world. Whereas most interventions for autistic children involve directly suppressing autistic behaviors and training competing skills, the Brennemans have been able to achieve excellent progress by working with Genevieve's autistic features and obsessions and gently channeling them into knowledge and skills that have facilitated her development. They have also helped Genevieve to develop some of the talents that enrich her life and draw others to her. I am always impressed when children with autism function as well as Genevieve by her age. I am doubly impressed when the route to this good outcome was forged by a family following their own path, relying on their own intuitions, and creating their own successes. Genevieve is a remarkable, delightful young lady and her family, both parents and siblings, are equally remarkable. Dr. Glen Davies, Ph.D., R.Psych. Director, ABLE Developmental Clinic Inc. In this wonderful book Ms. Brenneman goes beyond translation and becomes our guide through the fascinating world of autism and the heart-warming journey of her family.
