CARMELLA ALVARO, owner and pasta maker at Melina's Fresh Pasta in Durham, North Carolina, grew up in an Italian-American family. After years of watching her mother make Italian food with ingredients from her father's garden, she wanted to share in the tradition of cooking from scratch with care and love--serving homemade food to family and friends.
