Overview

African American Studies - American Slavery. A collection of spirituals, plantation melodies and work songs from the memories of American ex-slaves. Work songs were rhythmic songs intended to increase productivity while reducing feelings of boredom, while the more traditional Negro Spirituals where an expression of religious faith. Spirituals are a musical form that is specific to the religious experience in the United States of Africans and their descendants. There are also recollections of the songs used by soldiers from the Civil War as well as children's songs from the period. Taken from interviews with former slaves carried out by the Federal Writers Project between 1936-38 this is an excellent resource of material for those interested in the lyrics and music from the era of American Slavery.

Author Information

Chattel slavery, also called traditional slavery, is so named because people are treated as the chattel (personal property) of an owner and are bought and sold as if they were commodities. It is the least prevalent form of slavery in the world today. An estimated 12 million Africans arrived in the Americas from the 16th to the 19th centuries. Of these, an estimated 645,000 were brought to what is now the United States. The usual estimate is that about 15% of slaves died during the voyage, with mortality rates considerably higher in Africa itself in the process of capturing and transporting indigenous peoples to the ships.
