Overview

The National Heritage List was created in January 2004 to recognise, celebrate and protect places of outstanding heritage value to the nation. One aspect of natural heritage that has been little explored is Australia's wealth of exceptional fossil sites. While a small number of fossil sites have risen to public prominence, there are many lesser known sites that have important heritage values. The Australian Heritage Council engaged palaeontologists from state museums and the Northern Territory Museum and Art Gallery to compile lists of outstanding fossil sites and to document their characteristics and relative importance against a range of categories, with a view to further our understanding about Australia's important fossil heritage. Sites that were listed for National or World Heritage values were not included in the places for consideration, with the focus being on lesser-known but still important sites.

Australia boasts some of the world's most valuable fossil treasures, such as the approximately 600-million-year-old Ediacaran fauna of South Australia that records some of the oldest evidence for complex, multicellular life. The Australian Heritage Council has produced a colorful, insightful catalog of the country's key fossil sites. The new guide provides a general inventory of Australia's palentological heritage by summarizing the scientific significance and history of discovery of over 75 of the nation's most impressive fossil locales. The book is part reference tome, part tourism brochure. It is arragned geographically, with ten or more fossil sites listed for each state. Each site is described in brief detail and includes references to the most important scientific work, photographs of important fossils, and in some cases, breathtaking artistic renderings of what the ancient ecosystem in question may have looked like. These paintings, by noted Australian paleoartist Peter Schouten, set this book apart from other regional fossil catalogs. Although not an exhaustive encyclopedia, this book is the best general summary of Australian palentology available and is a useful resource for interested readers. Summing Up: Recommended. Palentology collections serving academic students of all levels, scientists, policy makers, and the general public.
